Flotsam's Wonder Tonic

Happy New Year! It's been awhile since I last posted, so here goes. I shot this film for Mike Shine in July and finished it in December. It's purpose was to play alongside his art at the Aqua gallery in Art Basil Miami, and again at SFMoma's 75th Anniversary show. The concept was based on a comic that Mike drew and bases most of his art on. I feel like it's kind of a cop out to say that it's a film that's open for interpretation but it is, so suck it.

The other day, I went by accident to an abandoned factory in Hunter's Point. Although I was pissed about being lost, I was happy to see such a heaping pile of industrial waste. I went back and took some photos of the place. Check it out on Flickr.

Life Is Super

This is without a doubt, the darkest film I've ever made. It's far from what I normally make, but I like the balance of morbidity and cynical humor in it. I hope you will too. I plan on cutting a funnier version of it in the near future.

I just finished shooting a short film called, "Life's Super." Don't let the name fool you, there's nothing super about the main character's life. It's a story about an invincible super hero, that wants nothing more than to take his own life. I'll post it in a few weeks after post production.

A sizzle reel is an industry term for a video montage of past work. Personally, I hate the term, but the way it rolls off your tongue... SIZZLE! So infectious. Anyway, this montage (SIZZLE!) is a collection of work (SIZZLE!) that I've either shot, directed, or edited (SIZZLE!). Music by a blues band called Mad Midget (SIZZLE!) and an intro from the 60's TV show One Step Beyond. Enjoi (SIZZLE!)

New for the month of April (yeah I know it's May) are some Chipotle ads I directed and edited. The whole idea is that Chipotle's sort of assembly line ingredient process allows you to fully customize you meal. I completed about 7 of these spots, but my two favorites are below.

This 10 minute documentary premiered at Mike Shine's surf shack recreation installation at the Museum of Craft and Folk Art, San Francisco. The film delves into Mike's inspiration behind his art, as well as the environment he has created in his Bolinas surf getaway.

Hot Elderly Fun

Bored one Wednesday night, I decided to do what anyone would do on such a night. Draw an elderly couple getting ready to tongue each other down on an old cigar box. Normally when my reasoning behind making a piece of art is questioned, I'll make up some pretentious phony bolony (yes, I know it's spelled bologna, but phonetically this looks better) explaination. But... no... it's just weird. End of story. However, if you like it and would like to buy this tribute to geriatric tonsil hockey, let me know.

Shine Lounge

Last weekend, I took a trip out to a coastal town north of San Francisco named Bolinas, CA. My reason for this trip... to shoot a mini documentary for artist, Mike Shine, directed by Stacy Peralta (Dogtown Z-Boys, Riding Giants). The documentary will air at Mike's art show at the Museum of Craft and Folk Art SF, March 5th - May 24th. The installation for the show will be a recreation of his Bolinas Surf Shack. So the plan was to go to Bolinas, shoot the original surf shack, and hear Mike's inspiration for creating it.

So I made the trek across the GG Bridge, over Mt. Tam, and up the coast to Bolinas. As soon as I got to town, I was blown away by how unique it was. The town radiates surf and art culture. Weathered old buildings, graffiti tagged walls, salty surf bums, and even a voodoo woman that word has it, once was a prominent San Francisco lawyer until she went crazy.

We spent the day shooting and checking out the town, and spent the night drinking, drawing, and eating some killer Mexican food that Mike's son made us. Woke up the next morning and shot even more footage, packed up the gear and headed back to the city just in time to watch the Steelers win #6.

The video will be completed in a few weeks so check back for the update.

Los Cabos

It's 2009 and I have just returned from Cabo San Lucas. I took an old super 8 camera with me to capture some of the trip. I love the way old film looks, so gritty, so dirty. So I cut a 1 minute video to a Nightmares on Wax track that, coincidentally I never heard before but was listening to while loading the footage. Weird how sometimes the prefect song comes out of nowhere.
